It\u2019s an extremely competitive landscape, with hundreds and sometimes thousands of people applying for the same new grad software engineering positions. Recruiters look at resumes for less than a minute, and often that is after they are parsed by an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pathrise.com\/guides\/best-resume-format-for-ats-with-resume-template\/\" rel=\"dofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">applicant-tracking system (ATS)<\/a>.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve worked with hundreds of software engineers to optimize their resumes so they make it past the ATS and the first glance recruiter and move forward with next steps. Here are our top tips.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Start Your resume Statements with Strong, Action-Oriented Words<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve just finished a coding bootcamp, odds are that most of the items on your resume are going to be related to websites or apps you developed in the program. Maybe you have some internship experience as well, which is likely similar to the type of work you were learning or practicing in your bootcamp.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t mean you can start every sentence with \u201cDeveloped,\u201d \u201cCoded,\u201d or \u201cProgrammed,\u201d because those words won\u2019t excite or interest the recruiter. Of course, they want to know if you can code, but they also want to know more about what you did.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples of strong resume sentence-starters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Led a team of\u2026<\/li><li>Spearheaded design and development for\u2026<\/li><li>Accomplished project goal of\u2026<\/li><li>Established new system by\u2026<\/li><li>Organized team and\u2026<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/careerkarma.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/nesa-by-makers-701360-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2664\"\/><figcaption>Use strong, action-oriented words to make your Software Engineer resume stand out.<br><br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Quantify Your Impact<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re describing your projects and experiences, make sure your statements are impact-forward. Avoid explaining the grunt work you did&#8211;like, \u201cDeveloped X for Y.\u201d Instead, focus on <em>why<\/em> and <em>how <\/em>you did it. What was the impact of your work? What results did you achieve?&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re having trouble quantifying the results because the project didn\u2019t launch, the audience was small, or the goal wasn\u2019t reached, don\u2019t worry! Ask yourself some of these questions to come up with some numbers to include:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What was the scale?<ul><li>How many devices did I serve?<\/li><li>How many scenarios\/permutations\/tests did I consider\/handle?<\/li><li>How many different methodologies did I implement?<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What did I results did I achieve?<ul><li>How many users did I launch to or will I launch to?<\/li><li>How many users\/groups used it?<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These resulting statements should look more like, \u201cSpearheaded X by implementing Y, which led to Z.\u201d For example, \u201cSpearheaded a Waze-like app for Pokemon Go players by implementing Ruby on Rails, which led to 40% time saved on finding Pokemon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/careerkarma.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/photo-1534665482403-a909d0d97c67.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1771\"\/><figcaption>Quantify your impact on your Software Engineer resume.<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Highlight Your Technical Skills<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Prospective employers will look at your resume for six seconds to one minute, or potentially have it parsed through an ATS, so you need to do everything you can to make sure it matches the job description <strong>exactly, <\/strong>wherever you can.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Create a designated \u201cSkills\u201d section, so when a recruiter is glancing at your resume, they will see it immediately. Tailor your resume specifically to each job to directly match the job description. Applicant-tracking systems, and sometimes human recruiters, are looking for those words, and won\u2019t recognize a partial match. For example, if the job requires experience in \u201cRuby on Rails,\u201d and you just have \u201cRuby\u201d on your resume, it won\u2019t pick it up. Similarly, if past experience is required as a \u201cSystems Software Engineer,\u201d and you have \u201cSoftware Engineer, Systems,\u201d you need to make it match!<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/careerkarma.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/f29144edcf4f1554501854-Marked-up-resume-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4802\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These tips are just the beginning.
