Course Schedule Week 1: Orientation! *Introduction and Basics -Introduction to AWS tools, students will have their own environment to work with. First we cover the uses of a console, terminal, text editor, and cloud9. - Fundamentals: Ruby classes, variables, loops (while loops), .map, arguments, hashes, and structures. -Practical topics: pointers, iterating in Ruby, each with index, chaining methods, and optional arguments. Week 2: *Object Oriented Programming - Fundamentals: classes as objects, the difference between state and behavior, class versus instance, setters/getters, functions versus methods, classes as models, and relationships between instances. -Practical topics: inheritance, private methods, singleton, class practice, modeling a domain. • • Syllabus • • • • Page 2 Week 3: *Testing - Fundamentals: Rspec, spec helper, syntax, expect, unit tests, test methods, test classes, before each versus all. -Practical topics: tdd, pair tdd, bdd, stubbing, context, subject, testing with challenges, tdd challenge, recursion. -Resume best practices. Week 4: We will discuss manageable ideas for your first project. *Rails/Backend Frameworks - Fundamentals: MVC, models, views, controllers, routes, migrations, gems, CSS, database, rake tasks, SQL. -Practical topics: ActiveRecord, changing active record methods, optimizing database use, noSQL, redis, rails console. Week 5: *First Individual Project! You will make your first Rails application. We will be with you throughout the entire process. We are going to focus on logic and functionality of the project rather than design, though you will be installing bootstrap in order to have a simple layout. Week 6: *Introduction to Javascript, more HTML -Fundamentals: let/var/const, loops, objects, classes in js, ES6, fat arrow syntax, passing functions as arguments, returns, types. -Practical topics: debugging in the console, script tags, HTML attributes, CSS, asset pipeline, underscore, async requests, selectors, jquery.. Week 7: *Introduction to ReactJS -Fundamentals: JS classes, React lifecycle, react components: functions versus classes, componentDidMount, state vs props, context. You will make commits and deploy the app to the Internet so that you can show future employers what you made. Graduation Night! On the last day of class (Thursday or Friday) we will have a graduation ceremony for all our students.
