It started off really well as far as setting things up explaining the different software to use. The teaching model definitely wasn't my style and it is so crucial to be able to cater to the different styles of learning. It was 10% teaching 90% self-paced where they claimed that self pace is the best way to learn. The instructor would show us a concept, then would let us loose and would start working on his own project until we had questions. But the majority of the time, I didn't know what...
Pros
• The instructors know their stuff for sure • Get a refund if you don't get a job (of course upon graduation)
Cons
Teaching model isn't suitable for everyone

I didn’t know that much about programming before but I always wanted to learn. This program helped me learn the basics and connect with some programmers
Pros
Instructors were good and it was fun to go to class. I learned a lot about programming and computer science in general and with this knowledge I was able to get a promotion at work.
Cons
It didn’t really make me feel like I was ready to build my own apps without a ton of help.

When I ITT tech shut down the doors on me from getting my degree I thought all was lost and I wouldn’t have an opportunity again I decided to take a chance on Helio and was the best decision made . I’ve sharpened up my skills and added more to my IT experience.
Pros
It’s quick and fast learning experience and are set up for success
Cons
Wish course was longer

Terrible bootcamp

Helio Training Review: starstarstarstarstar

If you are looking to become a web developer please do not go here. I made a mistake choosing this boot camp simply because the price seemed good. When I started the bootcamp, the instructor was disorganized from the get go and made no effort to really challenge the students and keep everyone at the same pace. He was also unprofessional, showed up late, and discussed topics with students that I didn’t feel comfortable with. As the only minority student in the room I felt uncomfortable at the...
Pros
Refund your money if you cannot find work in 6 months
Cons
-Disorganized - Does not care about students who are struggling with the course and doesn’t provide additional resources for those students - Teachers aids are unhelpful and also do not know what they are doing, which should have been a...

Overall good, but caught them at a bad time

Having recently graduated from a Helio course, I felt that the quality of the course was good overall- although it was far more difficult to learn the material online due to classroom being shut down. (Please consider this review tentative until I actually find a job!)
Pros
-Lots of material covered in a short time. Classes can be audited for up to a year after graduation. - Does make an effort to follow up with recent graduates.
Cons
-Some coordination issues between staff members led to some delays in some projects.

As a college graduate that regretted giving up on Computer Science years ago, Helio Training provided me a chance to learn programming quickly. I was vaguely familiar with programming principles beforehand, so I was able to adapt to the quick pace. Learning JavaScript has been fun and challenging.
Pros
+ Fast paced to get you up to speed. + Constant support from the instructor. + Well designed curriculum and projects. + Focus on adaptation. + Able to provide top notch instruction despite Covid-19 outbreak.
Cons
- Forced to go remote despite paying for onsite experience (understandable, but still disappointing).

All the foundation I needed to get started on my new career path

It's honestly like drinking from a fire hose. There's just so much to learn, and there is no way to teach everything in 13 weeks, but I feel like I was taught enough to not only give me a foundation, but to give me a passion to continue to learn and grow as a developer. It's challenging, but I'm very glad I made the decision to switch careers. My instructor was very knowledgable and was willing to guide each student as we went. Only one student had any computer engineering...
Pros
The biggest "pro" was our instructor. Not only is Kevin Gladd very knowledgable, he is also very patient and willing to teach and re-teach at whatever pace his students needed. Sometimes this was challenging as some students needed to...
Cons
I was underwhelmed with their job support. While looking for bootcamps and considering whether or not I would really be changing careers, I knew getting into the work force after school would be the biggest challenge. I chose Helio...

Not the best experience

This was my experience from start to finish. Before I enrolled, I talked to someone about the course I wanted to do. The person that I talked to gave me good reasons to do the course that I chose and gave me high expectations what the bootcamp was going to be. I decided to go ahead and enroll in the program. I had high expectations, specially, for the amount of money I paid. I had previous HTML and CSS knowledge and that helped the first week. The rest of my time there it was a blur. There was...
Pros
- Because there wasn't a stablished curriculum and the instructions were confusing, that created a great classroom atmosphere where everyone in the class tried to help each other - The career center was helpful - Build an app with a real...
Cons
- No organization in the curriculum - The few times we received classes were uncleared - Assuming everyone knew all the matrial - If you don't do all the assignments from career center they won't reimburse you

I entered Helio with very little experience about HTML and CSS. I walked away with a lot more knowledge, but it's in more of a grey zone. I shall elaborate on that. The course is 3 months long, and goes over the MERN stack (for those who don't know what it is, it stands for Mongo, Express, React, Node). Somewhere around the three or four week mark, we began learning JavaScript. This is where things started to become really difficult. Over the next two months from that point, we learned how the...
Pros
-There were plenty of opportunities for hands-on and experimentation. Out instructor was supportive of research and we had no limits. -Collaborating with other teammates was certainly helpful. It was convenient to exchange knowledge and it...
Cons
-The particular instructor my class had would occasionally help with our problems by solving them for us instead of teaching us how to solve an issue. This proved to be a disservice much later in the course. -Our instructor did not write...

I really enjoyed my time at Helio. The after hours program was nice. I learned a lot.
Pros
I really enjoyed the hands-on curriculum the first half of the class. The direction for the in-class projects was valuable.
Cons
The second half of the class was more theory-based, and we didn't really get into code as much. Never received feedback on the in-class projects or homework, which would would have been nice.

My overall experience was great! Instructors care about the students' well being, and help you whenever you need help, in or out of class. I gave the curriculum 3 stars, because there were some technologies that the website said we would learn, but we did not cover them, and we were informed that they would not be covered (instructors seemed to not know of the online curriculum) I have some suggestions for the curriculum. While building our projects each week, and add to it, I think that the...
Pros
Great coworkers, wide scope of topics covered, awesome staff
Cons
Would like a little more hands on practice with what we are learning in class each day.

Overall I really enjoyed my time at Helio. My classmates and the instructors were all really nice and helpful. Unfortunately when I went the instructor had to leave and so we had to get a replacement mid way through the course which was kind of hectic.
Pros
Great atmosphere! Taught great skills with softwares. Helpful feedback. A good balance of teaching and work time.
Cons
Wish it was a bit more portfolio driven. With the instructor switch there was a lot of wasted time.

Who started Career Karma?

Created 2 years ago

So Career Karma was started by Artur, Ruben and myself out of our own struggles career transitioning into Tech. Our journey took place in 2014-2015 and if it wasn't for the three of us doing it together we wouldn't be here today. Once we got our high paying jobs in tech and I was working as a Software Engineer ... I say an incredible opportunity for others like me who were trying to learn how to code on their own but failing to complete their transition. Three years into us...

How do you successfully pass the technical interviews for Flatiron and Hack Reactor (Software Engineering and Cyber Analytics) ?

Created 2 years ago

Good question. They are very different so I would recommend doing prep courses for both to try it out. However, then decide which specialty you're most interested in and go for those technical interviews. In preparation, definitely complete the prep course. The next steps for you should be to ask the admissions officer about the type of questions that are going to be on the technical interviews. What resources do they recommend you review to get accepted? What they think will...
