Overall, the curriculum was designed and delivered well, but due to the time constraints, it couldn't delve deeper into some stack and technology that would have been helpful.
Pros
The teachers were great. Having a project to focus on really assisted learning.
Cons
The content and time could have benefitted from an increase.

I like the environment, and the social aspect. But the courses materials I felt like were not applicable in real world situation. Neither are the projects. I did learn new technologies along the way.
Pros
Learning experience, new technologies.
Cons
technologies are kind of outdated. doesn't follow with what the trend/market needs. The projects was not applicable to real world situations and projects.

In 2018 I was referred to the Platform by Per Scholas program by the New York Department of Labor. Platform is a joint venture between Per Scholas and Cognizant Technology Solutions. I was admitted to their program, and after a 12-week bootcamp focusing on big data technology frameworks I was interviewed by Cognizant and ultimately hired as a data analyst. This was a tremendous opportunity to get my foot in the door of the tech world and I am glad I took it.
Pros
1) Free. This is a big one. 2) Surprisingly thorough introduction to SQL, Java, and big data technologies, (e.g. Hadoop, Sqoop, Informatica) for a 12-week curriculum. Curriculum details will vary according to the specific class you take,...
Cons
The cons were fairly minor (to me), but: 1) Heavy reliance on internet resources such as external websites and videos for training material, some of which was out of date or of doubtful relevance to the subject matter. 2) Occasional...

I went through the Java Application Developer Bootcamp from June 2019 to November 2019. 20 students were selected. The first 6 weeks was strictly learning Java concepts. Then we were taught HTML, CSS, MySQL, and Spring.
Pros
The best part of the Bootcamp was the people I met. The instructors and classmates were so kind and helpful. Additionally, the material taught was very relevant.
Cons
The Bootcamp didn't do much in terms of job support . Also, the material towards the end was extremely rushed due to time constraint.

Decent technical curriculum for newcomers. Good career readiness training for more technical people. The instructors were very respectful, knowledgeable in some areas, and lacked a bit in others. Their experiences and advice was helpful to hear from though. It's a pretty mixed bag though. Some portions of their curriculum was structured poorly, as we spent one module on Business Logic and SQL. We learned more about JIRA and Stand ups than we did about SQL, which we barely touched. I...
Pros
Free tuition Post graduation Career help Great environment to learn in, and free to use their facilities as long as you can Aside from Java Developer course, they provide a lot of other courses.
Cons
Far if you're coming from Staten Island, Brooklyn, or Queens Technology is outdated (Could have been updated since 2018) - Taught Spring and JSX which I haven't seen many companies strictly use. Usually it's Spring Boot and...

The instructors exude great zeal in the material they teach. What may be complex concepts are broken down and explained in a well-format. The learning materials that are provided are vastly informational and prepares the practitioner for real-world work environment.
Pros
Fun environment, yet professional. Great faculty and staff. Provides sufficient preparatory material
Cons
Some of the slides contained typos and what appeared to be stale technical spec information.

Platform by Per Scholas is a decent school for beginning your tech career. It was paced well enough for technically apt newcomers to understand and develop their skills. It was structured well enough to leverage the student's knowledge from week to week, and the career readiness training was very helpful. Instructors were knowledgeable in some aspects, and if they weren't, they would mostly read from the curriculum provided. It was a mixed bag to be honest. At the end we were interview by...
Pros
Free! Good environment to learn, was always respected Instructors were helpful in providing insight and guidance. Career Readiness is probably the best takeaway (if you come from a technical background) One of the only boot camps that...
Cons
It's really out of the way if you live in Staten Island, Brooklyn or deep into Queens. Spring Boot could've been taught, regular Spring is pretty archaic at this point and it seems like a legacy technology which doesn't have much standing...

The Director of the Bootcamp at Platform By Perscholas reached out to me directly to take the Bootcamp at Platform by Perscholas. The experience at Platform By PerScholas was great. It helped me directly get hired, and I learned a lot with my class mates and it was a all free. I am forever grateful for the experience that I had at Platform By Perscholas
Pros
Learned a lot about Java, Spring and SQL, the software development process as well as working in a professional environment. And the Director directly helped me get hired in my career with a well paying salary that which was life changing...
Cons
None. The Bootcamp was free for me and it was held from 9-5 Monday - Friday. This may be hard for those who don't have a lot of free time and those who have other obligations and responsibilities, but for me it was not a con. I was...

The best part of this program is the ability to meet the professors personally and be able to ask questions whereas in online platforms it'll be less dynamic and would spend minutes searching for my answers online. Also, something that really helped me understand the different concepts was their personal experiences, that tied to the relevance of the course and what was being studied.
Pros
Great instructors and very knowledgable. I think that personal experiences rather than reading from a book solidify the learning experience since it can be tied to something that most likely we'll experience in the future.
Cons
The course was sponsored by a company but as the course went along, we found out that the positions that the company was training for were very limited. You also limit your hiring chance if you are not willing to relocate, and some of the...

My experience at Per Scholars was great overall. I’d recommend it to anyone. My professor was well versed in his topic of expertise and the coaches groom you to become a professional
Pros

Who started Career Karma?

Created 2 years ago

So Career Karma was started by Artur, Ruben and myself out of our own struggles career transitioning into Tech. Our journey took place in 2014-2015 and if it wasn't for the three of us doing it together we wouldn't be here today. Once we got our high paying jobs in tech and I was working as a Software Engineer ... I say an incredible opportunity for others like me who were trying to learn how to code on their own but failing to complete their transition. Three years into us...

How do you successfully pass the technical interviews for Flatiron and Hack Reactor (Software Engineering and Cyber Analytics) ?

Created 1 year ago

Good question. They are very different so I would recommend doing prep courses for both to try it out. However, then decide which specialty you're most interested in and go for those technical interviews. In preparation, definitely complete the prep course. The next steps for you should be to ask the admissions officer about the type of questions that are going to be on the technical interviews. What resources do they recommend you review to get accepted? What they think will...
