This is one of the scariest decisions I have ever made. I left a well paying, safe, secure, and long term government job to "do this thing". It turned out to be one of the better decisions I have made. I took this leap to provide a different life for me and my husband (and growing family one day). I wanted to expand our life and I needed to find something remote and flexible that paid more. I had my interview with Alchemy, was encouraged to apply for a scholarship and to my surprise-- got it!...
Pros
-Life long community support -Live instructor to ask questions, dive deeper into your learning. -Highly skilled instructors + TAs to help you debug when stuck. -Achievable deliverables. -Exposure and practice with DSnA -Coaching support...
Cons
-Big time commitment to incorporate around life -Difficult curriculum(worth it in the long run)

Like many folks, I lost my job when the pandemic hit. I started researching programming boot camps on the advice of some friends who had found success in tech after participating in similar programs. My background wasn't in this field, I had to do some light programming for various things in college but I never had any real grasp on what I was doing. I shopped around, I attended a few free intro courses that many boot camps offer to feel things out. They were fine, but things felt impersonal,...
Pros
Great support network from a team of experienced engineers. Great sense of community.
Cons
It's a boot camp. It can be extremely difficult sometimes and not everyone makes it.

Alchemy turned out to be a great experience. The instructional staff was top notch and continually demonstrated their vast experience as coders and teachers. They approached each day with professionalism, they were dependable, invested, and considerate. They provided one-on-one time with students and engaged with the Alchemy student community at school networking events. Educational excellence and a superior learning experience is clearly on Alchemy's agenda, as each cohort is staffed with 1...
Pros
Top notch staff and curriculum
Cons
Not for the faint of heart.

I'd first heard of Alchemy through a friend who went through the program in 2016. During the early pandemic I lost my job and decided it was time to take my future career more into my hands. I saw coding as an increasingly in demand field and with pay that would lead to financial security for myself and my family. I looked at programs around the Portland area and surveyed friends in the tech world to see what they knew about local code school options. One friend told me not even to bother...
Pros
Knowledgeable instructors Everyone is responsive and communicative when issues or questions arise
Cons
Big time commitment (it helped to save up money and rely on financing and plan for a few months post program to find a job)

Mostly Awesome!

A couple of months ago I would have written the most glowing review imaginable, but the reality since then has prevented me from doing that. In most respects Alchemy Code Labs is an excellent boot camp. It is very challenging, but with an excellent support system, and the instructors are very good. I'm just really not sure how much it prepares a student for getting an actual job in tech shortly after graduating. Most people I've seen that have little trouble getting a job are those with...
Pros
-excellent instructors -excellent support -strong format designed to be similar to the workplace
Cons
-it's possible to graduate without being strong in the skills that are taught at the school -needs more practical, repetitive practice tech interview like material

A bit lacking if you don't go through all courses

Overall, I had a great experience with Alchemy Code Lab. Of all the bootcamps I researched, this was the one which focused mainly on knowledge and proficiency. They aren't going to just shepherd you through their exercises and throw you into the world with a pat on the back; you're going to work hard, and you're going to learn.
Pros
- Immersive, in-depth courses - Great instructors and TAs - Focus on knowledge and proficiency - Alchemy is very active in the programming community, and encourages participation in meetups and events
Cons
Due to financial and scheduling issues, I could only complete the Fundamentals and Intermediate course, and not the Advanced course. There really wasn't any career support for someone in my position; when I asked the career development...

I attended Alchemy Code Lab and completed the 401 Advanced JS course. It was the best decision I could have made for my career. I was offered a job in tech within one month of graduation....and my salary is higher than it's ever been! I know that finding jobs like the one I have now is what leads most people to coding bootcamps. And while I am very grateful to ACL for positioning me to land such a job, the new career is not the most valuable reward that I received from ACL. By far, the...
Pros
- Great curriculum that progressed through the lessons with each one building on the last. - Full-time TAs - Whiteboarding practice - School owned by a lovely family - Hosts meetups - After graduation you could always come into the school...
Cons
- I believe that their course offerings have changed quite a bit since I was there. - I was last there in 2018 or 2019 and the number of students was exploding. I'd make sure that they still have the resources and the space to make it a...

Choosing to invest my future in Alchemy Code Lab was one of the best choices I've made. The community and resources are astounding. Though I could use this time to gush about the various instructors and leaders, instead, I'd like to focus on their success on remote-based education. The Alchemy team has honed an online experience that allows the Community to flourish. Never before would I have assumed I could make genuine and lasting connections with people I had only known over Zoom. The focus...
Pros
-The instructors are passionate about code, but even more passionate about your being empowered through the technology. -A multitude of ways for students and alumni to connect and continue learning. -A high amount of time is focused on not...
Cons
-The hardest part of bootcamp is setting aside the rest of your life for 6 months. Plan to have very little time for much else while you are at Alchemy. It is a worthy investment, but it can be daunting. -Being a software developer from...

Alchemy is unlike anything I've ever done before. From day one, the admissions team and instructors are just so welcoming and downright excited to get you started on your code learning journey. You not only get a extensive technical education in Javascript, you learn how to learn. Alchemy promotes how to learn new things, and how to adapt and use what you know with what you don't in order to be a successful Software Developer. The staff, the students, the alumni, they are all so supportive...
Pros
-Knowledgeable staff -Real World Training and Preparedness -Thorough Curriculum -Large network and support system of Alumni -Lots of meetups and sense of community
Cons
-Intense workload, be prepared for Full-Time commitment (60 Hours a week) This is not a negative, just how the program is.

I graduated from Alchemy Code Lab about a week ago, and I feel very lucky that I found the program. It was a tough six months, and as with any challange there were moments of doubt and frustration. At the end of it though, I know that I am a strong programmer, and I am ready for the job market. I couldn't have done it without Alchemy, and I would recommend it to anyone. All that being said, you are going to get out of the experience what you put into it. It is a tough course, they move...
Pros
The teaching staff is fantastic. They are understanding, warm and invested in your growth. The curriculum was challenging, without feeling overwhelming.
Cons
I think there are some minor tweaks to the curriculum that could fill out the experience a bit. Working on a existing code base, or open source project would have given another perspective. These are minor issues however.

I feel like I couldn't have chosen a better program

Attending this school was the best decision of my life. I had just gotten back from a 7 month bike tour through Europe and had been working in Ohio for a few months before making the decision to apply to Alchemy. I moved here about a week before the course began and didn't know anybody in Portland, but the program changed that quickly. I made some great friends! My cohort was filled with exceptional people from diverse backgrounds. One of the best parts of the experience for me was to be able...
Pros
- Great sense of community - People are always willing to lend a hand when you get stuck - Incredible teaching staff - Amazing owners and career services (for real, they're amazing)
Cons
- The curriculum frequently updates on the fly (this should probably be a pro, because Alchemy is flexible along with the ever-changing needs of the industry. They want to teach their students the things that will help them find a job)

An amazing program. You get what you put in

This is an absolutely amazing program. If you are dedicated to your studies and put your whole self into this, you WILL come out prepared and positioned to find work in this field. Finding work after the program is challenging, but during the program you are guided to develop and maintain your network. Both of my jobs came from people I met at my time during Alchemy, not by cold applying. I am so grateful to have gone through this program, and I recommend it for anyone who is interested in this...
Pros
All encompassing program gets you fully prepared to be a contributing member of a team in your first days of employment.
Cons
45 hour weeks are long. It was hard to maintain a job while going through this program.

Who started Career Karma?

Created 1 year ago

So Career Karma was started by Artur, Ruben and myself out of our own struggles career transitioning into Tech. Our journey took place in 2014-2015 and if it wasn't for the three of us doing it together we wouldn't be here today. Once we got our high paying jobs in tech and I was working as a Software Engineer ... I say an incredible opportunity for others like me who were trying to learn how to code on their own but failing to complete their transition. Three years into us...

How do you successfully pass the technical interviews for Flatiron and Hack Reactor (Software Engineering and Cyber Analytics) ?

Created 1 year ago

Good question. They are very different so I would recommend doing prep courses for both to try it out. However, then decide which specialty you're most interested in and go for those technical interviews. In preparation, definitely complete the prep course. The next steps for you should be to ask the admissions officer about the type of questions that are going to be on the technical interviews. What resources do they recommend you review to get accepted? What they think will...
