About App Academy

Founded in 2012, App Academy is a world-renowned coding bootcamp that has placed over 4,000 alumni in Software Engineering roles, at over 2,000 companies. App Academy offers programs that fit every learning style, including a Campus Software Engineering Program (with locations in San Francisco and New York), a Full-Time Online Software Engineering Program, and a Part-Time Online Software Engineering Program.

App Academy's flagship course, the Campus Software Engineering Program, is 16 weeks long. The San Francisco Campus Program features a Hybrid schedule (2 days on campus and 3 days remote), while our New York Campus Program offers an In-Person schedule (5 days on campus).

Designed by industry professionals, App Academy's comprehensive full-stack curriculum covers Ruby on Rails, JS, HTML/CSS, React/Redux, SQL, data structures, and algorithms. Simulating the collaborative work environments in the tech industry, students will participate in paired programming with their classmates and develop web applications from the ground up. These projects will get compiled into a Github portfolio and serve as their resume to employers. Upon graduation, students will work with a dedicated career coach who will guide them through the entirety of their job search. Job search support ranges from mock technical/non-technical interviews and resume reviews, to connecting grads with App Academy's vast employer network.  After all, App Academy’s goal is to ensure students not only land a full-time SWE role, but also advance in their careers for years to come.

For students who prefer remote learning, App Academy offers an Online Software Engineering Program (24-week full-time and 52-week part-time).

The cutting edge full-stack curriculum covers SQL, JS, Python, HTML, and CSS, in addition to state-of-the-art tools and web frameworks like ReactJS, Express, Flask, and SQL Alchemy.  Working in a dynamic team environment, students will build complex web applications that will form the foundation of their portfolio. Upon graduation, career coaches will guide them through their entire job search, from mock interviews to salary negotiation. From there, App Academy's partnerships team connects graduates with some of the most prestigious tech companies in the industry.

For students who need more time to discover whether software engineering is for them, App Academy offers Bootcamp Prep courses and access to an entirely free Bootcamp curriculum through the the App Academy Open platform.

I am currently an applicant of app academy. I truly enjoy their open curriculum because everything you need to know to solve problems for tech interviews are in the open curriculum they provide. It's easy to miss the details, but if you read the material carefully you will have all the tools you need to solve problems in the prep interview and the real one.
Pros
*Very professional *Really good reading materials *Good feedback after taking the prep exam
Cons
Nothing is coming to mind at this second.

App Academy Reviews: Is App Academy Worth It?

Filter by star rating

App Academy reviews indicate that attending App Academy is worth it if you want to enroll in an intensive training program to prepare for a tech career. App Academy has a Career Karma review rating of 4.6 out of five stars. Graduates loved the strong community, the pair programming method, and the career support offered to students. The only downside noted by some App Academy bootcamp reviews was the rigorous nature of the program.

However, many students also found the rigor to me a perk of the program. In fact, one App Academy Online Software Engineering Program review stated that the student went from having no coding knowledge to learning everything she needed to know to get a job during the 24-week coding bootcamp.

Having been to appacademy less than 10% of my original cohort made it. They have multiple complaints with the california postsecondary board as well as lawsuits (under hashmap labs) . They also have a reputation for not providing job assistance. Do not reccomend for anyone.
Pros
None this is the worst bootcamp on the internet
Cons
High prices, little help, favoritism, and open discrimination from staff. Ask me about my personal experience.

To reiterate a Yelp review left by Julie B. on 07/20/2020 ~6-8 pages back at the time of this post, "The program lacks representation of womxn, POC, and other minority groups. Also in my cohort, these marginalized groups left the program at a higher rate." This was definitely true for my cohort also in 2021-2022. I wouldn't redo a/A if I had to go back. If I did, I'd choose a different program or self-teach online for free or attend a more affordable regulated, accredited actual school program....
Pros
//*If you work for them for a few months to over a year, it'll be easier for you to find a job. //*If you have a STEM-related degree, half of one, a SWE friend or tutor, or befriend those in your cohort who did, then this program will be...
Cons
//*Most of the education staff is alumni from the program. If in the 24-week, you have mostly 16-week alumni teaching you curriculum they never took (though in time this'll likely change to being 24weekers teaching 24weekers). They are not...

Before joining, do thorough research on them. This includes their low-rated Google to Yelp reviews, YouTube videos and their comments, recent Reddit posts, and maybe reach out to alumni on LinkedIn (including those who didn't get engineer jobs after, so you get the true full picture). Note that typically they only ask alumni who had really positive experiences to leave reviews online on Google, Yelp, SwitchUp, Course Report, etc whereas the others are never asked to leave a review. As a...
Pros
-They have web development curriculum. You find out what is useful to know, even though you likely can't learn it using their resources alone (most of the time you'll likely be using outside resources actually). -In the career seeking...
Cons
So many. -Way too expensive for the quality of instruction to curriculum and teacher-to-student ratio -Not regulated, non-accredited education -Their incentives are not aligned with yours as the customer/student. They make money either...

I owe App Academy so much in terms of how far I have come when I started my journey into software development. However, after meeting people in the industry who have also gone through bootcamps, I have found that App Academy's price of $30k+ is on the steep side. Other bootcamps may be better and far more affordable, so it is definitely worth looking into reviews of other bootcamps. Curriculum was good but I feel it could have been taught more efficiently in a lot of ways. I was lucky enough to...
Pros
- Great start in a new foundation. Javascript, React, Node.js are great things to know in the industry. - Very intense course that will dramatically improve your ability to learn. - Job search (can also be a con with how intense it can be)
Cons
- Very expensive compared to other bootcamps that can also get you a job. - Misleading marketing team to suck more people in. - Not enough instructors for the amount of students (At least in 2020) - If you fail a weekly test (which can...

I applied and paid the money, got sick, wanted to go back couple months after, it was at the start of the covid, and they said no I've lost my chance. They took 5k $ and all I got for that was 2 teachers helping me out to solve a 20 minute coding question that took three of us 4 hours to solve. During my only week at App Academy, every question I asked got responded to by "google it". Not only to learn, literally the people who showed me as people who were teachers and were going to teach us...
Pros
They will tell you all the headlines for what you need to learn.
Cons
But don't ask them to teach you any coding because they don't know it either, they will ask you to learn by yourself and pay them if you can by yourself. If you think you will need help to learn coding, App Academy isn't for you.

Overall, App Academy has built a really strong structure not only around teaching a solid foundation, but also cultivating a strong network and helping people get employed. While grounded in a challenging technical courseload, the boot camp somehow emphasized soft skills like communication and collaboration especially through pair programming and team projects.
Pros
While I participated in the in-person full-stack program, it was still fully remote due to COVID. That being said, the constant pair programming, working with others, and collaborative zoom lectures really built a strong community. I've...
Cons
The rigorous timeline, especially with how backloaded it is, was a double-edged sword. When things were really busy (90+ hour weeks), I knew I was being prepared for real-world sprints where things are hectic and incredibly busy. That...

I had a great experience with App Academy. There were some inconsistencies with staff and the occasional student that derails lectures but the curriculum and overall structure rose above those problems.

App Academy was a good experience; challenging, but definitely educational. As my title indicates, the overall experience was just shy of what I would consider achieving true excellence (5 star ratings). Most instructors were great, but there were a few (they changed throughout the cohort) that did not present well. Curriculum was up-to-date in most cases, and included some instruction on computer science fundamentals, but also suffered at times from little errors and grammatical...

I am currently taking App Academy Open, which is a free version of their full in-person bootcamp curriculum. The curriculum is very well structured and easy to follow. Each section tells you the average time it should take to complete. Nevertheless be ready to put in tons of hours if you really want to succeed, it is not easy and you will get stuck. My goal is to break into the tech industry this year, so I broke the curriculum into weekly goals of about 40-60hours of work each week, which came...
Pros
Detailed instructions. Knowledgeable lecture instructors Tons of algorithm / data structure problems to practice Section time stamps to know how long you should be taking on problems/projects
Cons
Some of the projects could use a final gif or video that showcases what the end- product should look like. Sometimes is hard to imagine the end product from only reading the instructions.

Full disclosure, I'm not through the entire course yet. However, I have been studying long enough to be able to say that this is an awesome course. I have dabbled in programming for a number of years so a lot of the concepts are familiar, but overall in the last month, I have learned a ton!
Pros
The thing that I think is the most valuable is the amount of time spent actually writing code and testing out the principles that are taught. The instructor is very good at explaining concepts and demonstrating what he is teaching.
Cons
Likely the biggest con is that lack of ability to connect easily with other students and learn from everyone at the same time. That can be overcome to a degree by intentionally connecting with groups on other platforms and finding a good...

App Academy Courses and Curriculum

App Academy courses include both part-time and full-time learning schedules. Students can choose to attend an App Academy online program or take courses in person at either the New York City or San Francisco location.

App Academy Open is a free program that provides 1,500 hours of curriculum with no strings attached. However, other App Academy courses do require tuition fees. The 24 Week Online Software Engineering Program costs $31,000. In addition, the Campus Software Engineering Program costs $28,000. There is also an App Academy Bootcamp Prep course that costs $2,999 for in-person instruction or $995 to $3,795 for online instruction, depending on how much support you want. The Bootcamp Prep course also makes App Academy a great choice for beginners.

Participants of an App Academy bootcamp learn coding fundamentals as well as several programming languages, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Redux. The programs are rigorous, so if you choose the full-time option they advise against working while studying.

There are some minor test about typing speed, personality, pattern recognition. Then there are some minor learning modules about symbolic logic, HTML, and CSS, followed by a few assessments (quizzes) and finally a little take home web project where you build a little card with html and css. App Academy FAQs

What Is App Academy Cost and Tuition?

The cost of App Academy ranges in price from $17,000 to $36,000, depending on which course you choose (see the "Courses" section). Note that App Academy is significantly cheaper than a 4 year CS degree, which is at least 100k when including tuition plus living expenses.

What Is the App Academy Acceptance Rate?

It depends on which program you choose! Please note that the acceptance rate is counting all applications that come in, but in reality, not everyone who submits an application completes the process. The acceptance rate would likely be much higher if everyone finished the admissions process, but this is not realistic. And remember, our program is built for a career changer - we provide you with all prep materials needed to pass our admissions process.

16-Week Campus Program: Acceptance rate: 10.4%

52-Week Online Part-Time Software Engineering Program: Acceptance rate: 7.3%

24-Week Online Full-Time Program: Acceptance rate: 7%

How Can I Pay for App Academy?

You can pay App Academy tuition through several flexible payment options. Although paying upfront is possible, App Academy payment options allow students to begin paying only once they gain relevant employment in software engineering, albeit a higher tuition rate. Specifically, App Academy payment options include:

  • Paying App Academy tuition upfront is the best overall money-saving option. To help students pay costs upfront, App Academy also works with Climb as a preferred loan partner.
  • App Academy’s Income Share Agreement allows students to begin paying tuition once they secure a job that pays $50,000 or more. The Income Share Agreement is offered for the full-time online program, whereas the part-time online program has a deferred plan option. For the ISA, there is no deposit upfront, and the rest of the tuition is 15% of your monthly salary for 3 years capped @ 31k.
  • For our deferred plan options (16-week campus & 52-week part-time online program), there is a $3k deposit upfront, and the rest of the tuition is a flat rate due only after job placement.

How Do I Apply to App Academy?

The App Academy application process features several steps. Here are the steps to apply to App Academy:

  1. Submit an online application through App Academy’s website that details your personal and background information.
  2. Next, complete the 25-minute non-technical assessment test that covers logical reasoning and typing.
  3. You will then be asked to complete a 60-minute coding exercise. You have three opportunities to pass this portion of the App Academy admissions process. If you pass this, you’ll move onto the interview stage.
  4. Complete both the technical interview which include several coding prompts and other exercises.
  5. Lastly, you will need to complete a non-technical interview that helps the admissions team assess your overall readiness for the intensive coding program.

Though applicants need to pass several stages of the App Academy admissions process, the program is designed for beginners so even without coding experience you do have a chance of getting in.

How Do I Get Accepted Into App Academy?

To be accepted into App Academy, you need to be at least 18 years old and have a GED or high school diploma. No coding experience is required. App Academy wants you to succeed in the admissions process, and we provide you with all the resources needed to ace it!

What Is the App Academy Admission Process?

The App Academy admission process begins with a basic online application. You’ll then need to complete a reading and logic exercise. Applicants will also take part in a coding challenge that lasts for 60 minutes.

Successful candidates will then take part in both non-technical and technical interviews. Those who pass all stages of the admission process will be accepted into the program.

What App Academy Interview Questions Should I Expect?

Applicants take part in two App Academy interviews before joining the program. This includes technical and non-technical interviews, which are both important admissions interviews. In the technical admissions interview at App Academy, you can expect programming and coding challenges. In this interview, applicants can use programming languages like Python, Ruby, and JavaScript.

The non-technical admission interview is 25 minutes long. It is an opportunity for App Academy to get to know the applicant better. The type of questions to expect include, “Why do you want to enroll in App Academy?”, “What motivated you to learn to code?”, and “What are your expectations of the program?”. You can prepare for this admissions interview by making sure you are clear in your goals and motivation for learning to code.

Is App Academy Hard to Get Into?

Yes, it is hard to get into App Academy because it is a highly selective bootcamp. The bootcamp has a low acceptance rate and a strict application process. However, if you do not succeed in getting in, you can try again in six months. Taking the prep course can also increase your chances.

Does App Academy Offer Prep Courses?

Yes, App Academy does offer prep courses. The App Academy prep course is aptly named Bootcamp Prep. It was developed to help students prepare for the main bootcamp in any coding school. The prep program covers everything from how to handle job interviews to technical coding concepts. As such, attending the Bootcamp Prep course is a great way to prepare for coding school.

In addition, the Bootcamp Prep courses offers a money-bank guarantee if you are not accepted into at least one leading coding bootcamp after completing the course in 10 weeks.
