App Academy was easily the most demanding endeavor I've taken on. From Day 1, you need to be firing on all cylinders, and you need to be dedicated. App Academy is something that I'm really happy I did, but would never want to put myself through again. I don't have a job yet, but I have no doubt that I've been given the tools I need to succeed.
Pros
Having said all that, the instructors are fantastic, and really know what they're doing. They genuinely WANT you to succeed, and are very patient.
Cons
The assessments are quite difficult, as they are timed, and they're not subjective at all. If you make a silly mistake, you'll pay for it, and if you fail two exams, you're allowed to retake the second one. If you fail the retake, you're asked to leave. They are not messing around with this policy.

Overall, App Academy delivers what it promised. Now that I'm working as a full-time software engineer for almost a year now, I can truly say I would not be where I am without having gone through the App Academy experience. They really push you to your limits, but the grind reaps the reward, and for once I can truly say I'm working in a career that I'm passionate about.
Pros
- The curriculum is always up to date with the newest frameworks being used in the job market - The instructors push you to get to where you need to be in a short time span - You learn how to create projects to build up your portfolio, which will aid you in the job search - You don't have to pay tuition until you get a job
Cons
- Kicking out people is really, really bad. In my class of 73, we ended up with 49 people. I myself was very close to getting kicked out. The people who get kicked out feel worthless and many give up on the dream to become an engineer because of it. The funny thing is that there are people who have gotten kicked out who have not only gotten jobs with a higher salary than me, but also don't have to pay App Academy back. On the flip side, I know many talented people in my class who took a while to get a job, so the reason of kicking people out due to the logic of not getting jobs quick enough makes no sense. - You have no life. Besides, traveling, eating, and sleeping, this is all you do - You have to do this full time and in person. If you get kicked out and were paying for a place to stay during the program, you will be in a tough predicament - Not much help in the job search. You really need to treat the job search as its own skill and go above and beyond what App Academy says by networking and emailing as many people as possible. That's how I ended up with my job.

App Academy is a great program

Negative experience

Hard interview

App Academy is a great program that is starting to show its age a bit. The curriculum is intense and that intensity means you learn a lot more quickly than you would learn on your own. I personally found it super important for getting me started with no prior technical experience. In addition, the TAs are friendly and willing to sit and be patient to figure things out with you.
Pros
They have a free two-week prep program to help you pass the entrance exam.
Cons
The tuition guarantee was a huge positive for me as I likely wouldn't have done a bootcamp otherwise.
A good chunk of the process is luck. But if you prepare really well, you can make it

Hard interview

When I was preparing for the application process (2018) they gave you one shot at an interview and you had to kill it. I think you needed a perfect score but pretty sure if you had most of it down they'd accept you. My top advice is work HARD, practice a TON of the hard problems, count of the interview being the same level as the hardest questions from the prep course, and you'll be fine
Pros
-Merit based interview -They give you great material to prepare
Cons
-There is an element of luck involved. Algorithm questions don't accurately depict one's ability as an engineer
