I am a graduate of cohort 27 - 16 week Full-Stack Development with Java - and attest to the fact that Skill Distillery (SD) is all it claims to be. Like most things in life, you get with you give. If you apply yourself, show up daily, and ask for help when you need it, you will have the skills necessary to excel as a full stack software developer. The curriculum is spot on providing you with the necessary concepts making it easy to learn additional languages. SD is a family first and foremost....
Pros
Small cohorts, experienced and knowledgeable instructors, and great alumni network
Cons
Ran out of time to delve more into Big O and learn about algorithms.

After working for one year as a software developer, I can say with confidence that my life would not be the same without attending Skill Distillery's full-stack Java bootcamp. Sure you can take online courses or even other bootcamps, but my knowledge and experience would not be the same without their 16 week program. I know this because I complete an online bootcamp and other courses before attending Skill Distillery. Those courses didn't even come close to what you learn in the first month in...
Pros
The foundation you gain from attending Skill Distillery will prepare you for anything your new employer will throw at you.
Cons
You will only get out what you put in. You really have to decide if this is what you want before committing to this path. You have to love learning and love solving problems. If you do, then this is the place for you.

Skill Distillery is awesome and will change your life. Do it!

Skill Distillery teaches back end Java and then later on goes into JavaScript. This was ultimately what made me choose to attend and I am incredibly happy with my decision. These are two of the most widely used languages out there and having been exposed to both greatly increases the amount of available opportunities upon graduation. The entire staff is amazing, incredibly knowledgable and eager to share what they know. The instructors never once made me feel dumb for asking a question, they...
Pros
Very popular technologies taught. They teach Java which is a language that very few other boot camps go into. The entire staff is amazing, the instructional staff is always fun, knowledgeable and genuinely caring. I see them not as your...
Cons
No part time program available. Days can be long and if you ever fall behind it can be difficult to catch back up. Incredibly challenging to meet the demands of class while being a parent and having other responsibilities. This needs to be...

I cannot fully express how wonderful and helpful the instructional staff are. Every single one of the staff members go above and beyond to make sure all of your question's are answered. With that being said, there is nothing easy about a Coding Bootcamp. 16 Weeks of fast paced material. Skill Distillery does an excellent job at instructing material at a pace you can learn. I went from 0 coding experience and a medical background, to completing full Stack Web apps. Love Skill Distillery and...
Pros
Excellent Staff. Good course Material.
Cons
This was no ones fault, but I wish I could have taken this cohort in person. But Covid had other plans.

This was the best decision I ever made! I was currently in a dead-end sales job and not happy with where my career was going. I decided to take a leap of faith and do a career pivot into Computer Programming. I have now found the passion that has been burning inside of me! The Full Stack Java Web Development Program at Skill Distillery was the best! This bootcamp is no joke, you need to put in the time, work, and effort but just know you will be rewarded 100% once you graduate! The instructors...
Pros
The course is full of knowledge and you might think you are drinking from the fire hose but it is well worth it!!!! Trust the process! The Instructors are there to help you no matter what, so you will not be suffering in silence! The money...
Cons
My cohort was during the Covid-19 pandemic so it was all virtual - which was still amazing! But if you're not used to online learning - that might be a challenge - but the instructors and the team are there to help you and they made it...

Going to this bootcamp was a big chance for me as I wasn't sure about coding and didn't have experience. But I'm so happy now that I took that chance because I learned so much. I started in March and three days after starting, the bootcamp became fully remote due to covid. Although this was not what I wanted, I decided to trust in the process and the instructors really pulled through to give our class an awesome remote learning bootcamp. It was intense and this was my life for 4 months which is...
Pros
Instructors are exceptional Remote learning is made easy with zoom, slack, trello, github Weekend projects although hard made everything come together Great team work experience
Cons
Not sure what their plan is once things change with the pandemic but if you know you are not a remote learner, may be better to wait until it's back in person

Best decision I've made in a while

Very pleased with the school and the staff. You will be challenged, you will feel overwhelmed at points BUT you will learn so much and come out with a robust skill set if you stick with it!
Pros
- excellent and attentive teachers and instructors - full stack tutelage - staff is very accommodating and willing to help you
Cons
- material can be wordy/confusing at times - administration is not as attentive as rest of the staff

Skill Distillery’s 16-week course was an incredible experience. I was itching for a career change into software development, and Skill Distillery made that possibility a reality. Much like whoever may be reading this, I too read every review I could - even reached out to former students who all had positive things to say about the course. The fact that it is based on the Java language is an advantage for those wanting to gain practical experience using Object-Oriented Programming. The course...
Pros
* Caring and experienced staff * Great area for developer jobs
Cons
* Like most boot camps, the tuition can get expensive * Not so much of a con, but be prepared for the fast-pace and continued learning after the course is over

The regular class hours are 8:30pm - 5pm but it's in your best interest to stay for their after hours to complete your work, plus their Saturday hours. Besides getting help, you learn from others as well. A lot of this will help you in the real world as well. The curriculum prepared me, who came from a completely different industry, to understand what I was being discussed on my first day at work. Having access to it helps with getting refreshers. The instructors are also a motley crew of...
Pros
They prepare you for a real work environment. If you treat it as a job, you'll better prepare yourself to get and be successful at your job. Once you graduate you get access to the network of alumni that are always looking out by sharing...
Cons
There is no job assistance as in other schools. They do bring in recruiters to watch your midterm and final project. They conduct mock interviews and help with one on one technical interviews.

Skill Distillery was an intense but rewarding experience. It's hard to believe everything they managed to teach in 16 weeks, but I went from knowing almost nothing about programming to being able to comfortably code a full stack web application.
Pros
The staff is friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable. They want you to succeed and their support doesn't end at the 16 weeks, they do everything they can after to prepare their students for the job hunt.
Cons
It's a lot in a short period of time. It has to be the main priority and full time job for those four months

Choosing to go to Skill Distillery was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I essentially picked up my whole life and moved across the country to attend, and I don’t regret it one bit. I was working on a computer science degree in college and felt like the degree was taking far too long, with a lot of irrelevant classes that made my course load feel bloated. It was simply a more effective use of my time to spend 4 short months in a boot camp vs. 4 long years at a university. Skill...
Pros
The course is engaging and effectively teaches students how to build full stack applications from the ground up.
Cons
The pace is very fast. You can get lost if you don't put in the needed time and effort.

Skill Distillery Courses and Curriculum

There are two Skill Distillery courses available. These include the full stack development and web development programs. Currently, Skill Distillery online courses are taking the place of on-site programs because of the pandemic. It’s unclear whether or not Skill Distillery bootcamp programs will continue online once on-site courses have resumed.

Regardless, Skill Distillery is a good school for beginners who are willing to work hard. Students without experience don’t need to worry about being underprepared as the prework will ensure all students are up to par before the official start of the program. Students with some experience are still encouraged to apply as their experience acts as preparation for the course. It also accommodates students through its wide range of payment options.

How do you successfully pass the technical interviews for Flatiron and Hack Reactor (Software Engineering and Cyber Analytics) ?

Created 1 year ago

Good question. They are very different so I would recommend doing prep courses for both to try it out. However, then decide which specialty you're most interested in and go for those technical interviews. In preparation, definitely complete the prep course. The next steps for you should be to ask the admissions officer about the type of questions that are going to be on the technical interviews. What resources do they recommend you review to get accepted? What they think will...
