The program has an interdisciplinary approach, with faculty from various departments such as Sociology, Romance Studies, Philosophy, and History.
Students choose from six different specializations, which include Jewish Studies, Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean World, and Buddhist Studies. All students accepted into the program are offered a Dean’s Fellowship, which comes with a living stipend and full-tuition. It lasts for five years.
University of Iowa
The University of Iowa offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies Program which is designed to prepare students for teaching and studying religion. Students use the skills they learn within the program for academic or career purposes. Throughout the program, students work with faculty members and advisors within multiple departments, such as History, Philosophy, and Anthropology. The program is designed to be completed within six years.

This intense degree program comes with several requirements, which include completing 72 hours of coursework and having reading knowledge of at least two languages. Students must also complete and defend their dissertation.
Northwestern University offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies. The program is small and flexible and prepares students for both the method of religious studies and the history of theory. Students spend two years of the program completing coursework, half of which is within other departments.
The unique, interdisciplinary approach allows students to reach out to a larger array of colleagues and mentors for their students. Students create dissertation committees with at least one faculty member from a different department. Throughout the five-year program, students focus on writing and researching their dissertations.
Harvard University has an incredible Doctor of Philosophy in Religion program that comes with several areas of study. Students choose specializations, such as African Religions, Jewish Studies, Religion and Society, Hebrew Bible, and South Asian Religions. Faculty in the program work as anthropologists, scholars of texts, historians, and more.
Established in 1934, this program is known for being competitive and rigorous. Only five to six percent of applicants are admitted at a time. Applicants aren’t required to have a master’s degree to enter the program, but it’s rare to be accepted without one. Applicants must also have a strong foundational language related to their specialization.
University of Pennsylvania
The University of Pennsylvania offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies in four areas. Students have the opportunity to learn about the Bible, Islamic history and thought, and more. Throughout the program, students work with faculty to create individualized study based on their interests. Most students complete the program within five years.
Throughout the program, students take on traditional coursework while working as teaching assistants. They also attend graduate colloquiums. To complete the degree program, students must study multiple languages, pass preliminary and qualifying exams, and complete their oral dissertation defense.
Georgetown University offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Theological and Religious Studies program that focuses on the multicultural and multireligious world. The program consists of 36 graduate credits and takes five years to complete full-time. After two years of coursework, students spend a year in preparation for their examinations and dissertation proposal. The final two years are spent writing their dissertation.
In addition to coursework, students have the opportunity to take part in workshops for professional development. Workshops teach students how to write scholarly articles and cover letters. Students also work as teaching assistants during the second year of their students. After completing exams, students are allowed to teach undergraduate courses.
Florida State University
Florida State University offers hundreds of degree programs, which include its Doctor of Philosophy in Religion degree. The program has four tracks for students to choose from, which are History and Ethnography of Religions; Religions of Western Antiquity; Religion, Ethics, and Philosophy; and American Religious History. Students must complete 24-hours of coursework that goes beyond the master’s degree level and earn dissertation credits.
Applicants of the program must have high grades and GRE scores to be accepted. Applicants must also submit a writing sample, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. There may be other requirements for consideration into the program.
Duke University offers a unique graduate program for religious studies. Its design makes it significantly different from others. The school’s graduate program acts as a collaborative effort between multiple departments at Duke University, which includes its Department of Religious Studies and the Duke Divinity School.
Due to the relationship between Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University, students in Duke can cross-register in graduate courses and take advantage of course offerings from multiple universities. Only a small number of students are admitted into the program, which has a size of only 65 to 75 students each year.
