Get in touch to learn more!Meet TEST PRO Mentor Keri Aldahondo
To give you more insights on the QA job market and how TEST PRO helps graduates land jobs, we spoke to QA manager and TEST PRO mentor Keri Aldahondo, who has 13 years of experience in the field.
In her day job, she oversees a team of 11 QA Engineers. As a TEST PRO mentor, she meets students face-to-face, helps them perfect their résumé, and prepares them for QA job interviews. “It’s one of my favorite parts!”
While TEST PRO is committed to helping graduates land jobs, Aldahondo says students must first put in the time and work, learn everything they can, and ensure they have a solid grasp of QA fundamentals.
“After the course, I [advise them to] apply for everything they are at least 50 percent qualified for. Don’t eliminate yourself from a position! If you are really interested in a company, you should tailor a version of your résumé to match their job posting more closely.”
“Sometimes, you can also connect with the hiring managers and other various people in the company on LinkedIn so they might notice you. The first step in finding a job is definitely a great résumé though,” she offers.
Touching on the state of the QA job market, Aldahondo, who quoted information from a job recruiter she works closely with, notes that the “market is fine” and that mid- and small-size tech companies are hiring.
On that basis, she says the tech industry is a safe bet, recession or not. Technology is never going away. People who can build and test software will stay in demand because there will always be software that needs testing. In her words, several factors make a QA career worth getting into.
“It’s the pay (starting salary and especially the ceiling!), the flexibility to work from home, the ability to always be learning and growing, and honestly, the bragging rights. It’s an impressive career!”
Graduates can also look at several paths in QA. “You can be promoted upwards to mid-level, senior-level, Lead, Manager, Director, or VP,” says Aldahondo. “You can also be promoted laterally to Automation and then up the same path, for more pay than manual alone. You could also consider other roles in the organization like BA, PO, Scrum Master, or Developer. It all depends on your skills and interests.”
Asked what makes her proud of her students, she recalls a success story involving one of her students who landed a great job even before she graduated. Since getting hired, the student has also earned a promotion. “Another student was also so good that TEST PRO created a position and hired him themselves.”
Put simply, you can look forward to similar experiences, as long as you put in the necessary time and effort to complete the course.
